Best Summer Books

What makes great summer books? I think it’s different for everyone, but for me, the best summer books follow this criteria:

  • Easy reading
  • Nostalgia-inducing
  • Funny (even if it’s just a little)
  • Relaxing (this isn’t called read.breathe.RELAX. for nothing ;))
  • Romantic

Best Summer Books

If you live in a climate like Florida where every day is summer, then these books also double as great books regardless of the season. Let’s clink our mojitos to awesome summer books!

Confessions Georgia Nicolson series

angus thongs and full frontal snogging summer books

Title & Author: Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison

Summer criteria met: Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging, along with the rest of the series, is so, so so funny. I remember dying laughing at these books. Plus, it’s silly and sweet all at the same time.

Best place to read:Alone in your room after after enjoying a day at the beach. If you’re like me, you’ll be laughing so hard that you’re crying, and it’s best to do these antics in private.

Bonus: If you don’t feel like reading, just watch the movie: Angus Thongs & Perfect Snogging Adorable!

The Decoy Princess

Title & Author: The Decoy Princess by Dawn Cook

Summer criteria met: Romantic and easy-to-read.

Best place to read:Curled up with a blanket sipping something cool. The romance in The Decoy Princess deserves to be savored and enjoyed slowly.

Bonus: Pirates and sea life. I love a good sailing adventure.

Feeling Sorry for Celia

feeling sorry for celia summer books

Title & Author: Feeling Sorry for Celia by Jacyln Moriarty

Summer criteria met: Romantic and notalgia-inducing. I read this book in middle school and loved how the story is told through letters, notes and even post-its. It is such a charming idea.

Best place to read: Poolside. Because the book is written in note-size chunks, it’s easy to follow and not a book you have to pay super close attention to to enjoy.

Bonus: Mystery guys. The main character Elizabeth tries to determine between 3 different guys who is leaving her cute, romantic notes.

The Selection

the selection by kiera cass

Title & Author: The Selection by Kiera Cass

Summer criteria met: Easy reading and romantic. Plus, I couldn’t put it down!

Best place to read: When the summer boredom hits. There’s always a moment during the summer when you’re on vacation or lounging around at home where restlessness sets in. The Selection will shake you from your listless funk with intrigue and suspense.

Bonus: Princes and palaces. Serve up your summer with a side of whimsy.

This Lullaby

this lullaby sarah dessen summer books

Title & Author: This Lullaby by Sarah Dessen

Summer criteria met: Romantic, nostalgia-inducing and relaxing. Sarah Dessen writes about teenage life like no other author. It’s so authentic and raw. Reading Dessen is a great way to dream away the summer.

Best place to read: Vacationing in the mountains/other scenic spot. This book begs to be read away from everyday life, so you can sink into the characters’ lives even more.

Bonus: There’s a scene where Remy and Dexter go camping. How summer-ish is that?!

The Truth About Forever

the truth about forever sarah dessen summer books

Title & Author: The Truth About Forever by Sarah Dessen

Summer criteria met: Relaxing, easy reading and funny. This book surprised with its witty humor and deep insights. Dessen has a way or writing that is so effortless, which makes reading that much more interesting and fun.

Best place to read: In a lounge chair – any location will do. This book actually takes place during the summer, so reading it anytime in the next few months would be ideal. 🙂

Bonus: Self discovery FTW

Jessica Darling Series

sloppy firsts megan mccafferty summer books

Title & Author: Sloppy Firsts by Megan McCafferty

Summer criteria met: Nostalgia-inducuing and romantic. These books take me back to high school – despite my experience being nothing like Jessica’s. I love how real these books are and how snarky the characters are.

Best place to read: In your favorite recliner – mainly because you’d be following the subliminal instructions from the book’s cover!

Bonus: High school angst always puts me in a good mood (cuz I know I’m not there anymore!)

What are your favorite summer books and where do you love reading them?
