Best Young Adult Books of 2014 (So Far)

With half of the year gone already (how did that happen?!), it’s that time again to list my list of best young adult books of 2014 so far!

Although there were so many great reads this year, it was pretty easy to narrow it down to the absolute best ones. The books below were just outstanding in every way.

Best Young Adult Books of 2014 (So Far)

Best Fantasy

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski

the winner's curse marie rutkoski

I was so captured by the story-telling of this book. It incorporated a totally original idea and it was executed perfectly. I loved Kestrel and her warrior strategy and the enchanting game of Bite and Sting. I loved everything about this book.

Top Surprise Factor

Under Different Stars by Amy Bartol

under different stars amy a bartol best young adult books of 2014

I didn’t know what I was getting myself into with Under Different Stars. It sounded interesting, but I wasn’t expecting to be completely and utterly sucked in. This book!!! I found it literally impossible to put it down and read it in one sitting, through the night.

Best New Debut Series

Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen

stolen songbird danielle l jensen best young adul tbooks of 2014

Stolen Songbird is the start of a very promising new series. The romance was fiery, the political scene intriguing and the hidden world of Trollus fascinating. Definitely a stand out read.

Fastest Read

Killer Instinct by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

killer instinct jennifer lynn barnes best books of 2014

Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a master storyteller. Killer Instinct is everything The Naturals was but more. Crime solving teens could tend to be cheesy or overdone, but Barnes offers something new in these books, and it’s so addicting and genius.

I read this on the way back from BEA, despite it’s pub date of November. Cuz I like torturing myself with sequel wait times…

Most Feels

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

eleanor and park by rainbow rowell best young adult books of 2014

Quite literally all the feels were experienced during Eleanor and Park. It’s just so good and sweet and lovely and sad and romantic. I don’t know make hand-holding could be sexy, but Rowell does it. And does it WELL.

Best Sequel

Cress by Marissa Meyer

cress marissa meyer best young adult books of 2014

I could go on forever about Cress and the whole Cinder series. Each book so far has added so much value to the series as a whole. Each one better than the last. That’s an incredible thing to be able to say about sequels, when so.many.completely.fail.

Winter is going to be the last book of the series out next year, and I can’t even wait to see what Meyer has in store!

Best Fantasy

Plus One by Elizabeth Fama

plus one by elizabeth fama best young adult books of 2014

Plus One blew me away. The alternate history take on the flu pandemic created a dystopian environment without all the tropes. This is a book that will make you feel so much and appreciate every action-packed second full of family love and political unrest.

Most Unique

Uninvited by Sophie Jordan

uninvited sophie jordan best young adult books of 2014 so far

I dubbed this the “minority report” of the YA world. I LOVED the concept behind this book, and am honestly surprised I haven’t seen it elsewhere before. I thought about this book long after I was finished reading, and I’m worried but excited to see where Jordan goes next in this crazy new world of kids with kill genes.

Favorite Book Club Read

The Giver by Lois Lowry

the giver by lois lowry book review

By far, The Giver was my favorite book club pick. I had never read this classic in school, and I’m so glad I finally did. It’s kind of like the grandfather of all dystopian books, and set the bar very high for this genre. It was subtle and simple and pure genius.

Best Overall

Snow Like Ashes by Sara Raasch

snow like ashes sara raasch best books of 2014

So, I haven’t reviewed this book yet because I’m holding my review until September, but just know…THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!!! I loved every flipping second, and I’m so excited about what’s to come. The heroine is fierce and strong-willed and the world created felt so real.

It has a Finnikin of the Rock flair but – to me – was much, much more palatable. I am obsessed and have told everyone I know about it…even though it’s not coming out for awhile. I don’t care cuz I love it that much!!
