Description:
But with a mother on the lam, the girl he loves about to take her place in the Mob, and new secrets coming to light, the line between what’s right and what’s wrong becomes increasingly blurred. When the Feds ask Cassel to do the one thing he said he would never do again, he needs to sort out what’s a con and what’s truth. In a dangerous game and with his life on the line, Cassel may have to make his biggest gamble yet—this time on love.”
If Black Heart is Wrong, I Don’t Want to Be Right
Throughout White Cat, Red Glove and now Black Heart, Cassel constantly fights his true nature, which involves cheating, lying, stealing and conning. He always wants to do the right thing, but somehow he ends up back to his roots and instincts.
That’s what makes Black Heart amazing – the ability to paint a character who is so broken and jaded yet still works (no pun intended) to do the best he can by his friends and family. Cassel is hilarious and snarky and definitely lovable (despite his efforts to remain otherwise).
Plot-wise, everything comes full circle in this book. I’m not saying the ending ties things up nicely in a little bow, but it offers a satisfying conclusion to this amazing series. Plus, there are FANTASTIC twists and turns that I NEVER saw coming! I love it when an author truly surprises me.
There’s a lot more sizzle in this book too! I won’t say too much because I dont’ want to give anything away, but there is romantic encounters placed sporadically all throughout the book. Cassel and Lila’s relationship is stunning in its complexity.
Black Heart is well-written with amazingly fleshed-out characters. It definitely is making my best of 2012 (so far) list! My one and only complaint is that we saw very little of Cassel’s grandpa in this book (I LOVE him!!), but hey, the old man’s gotta rest sometime.
OVERALL:
I absolutely loved Black Heart. Black is a fantastic writer with a knack for dialogue and descriptions. The story was well-paced and left me in delicious suspense over and over. I hope everyone reads this series if they haven’t. For fans of the Curse Worker trilogy, pick up Black Heart soon and prepare yourself for some late nights finishing this book!
