Books Made Into TV Series

With the popularity of shows like Pretty Little Liars, I would think there would be more TV series made from books. The only ones I can think from YA and fantasy books are:

  • Gossip Girl
  • Vampire Diaries
  • Game of Thrones (Fantasy series)
  • Plus, Pretty Little Liars

Can you think of any others? Sadly, I haven’t read any of the books that inspired the TV shows.

If I had MY pick, though, I would make the these books into TV series based on their awesome story lines (that would have to be built on over time), mass appeal and well-developed characters:

  • Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging- There are like 10 books in this series, so material for this TV show would not be lacking. Plus, people would seriously die laughing at Georgia’s antics. There was a 2008 movie based on the book recently. It can be found here.
  • The House of Night series- I think this would have mass appeal and could totally run on Fox Family.
  • The Mortal Instruments series- If these books (which I haven’t finished, GAH!) were made into a TV series, people would not be able to contain themselves. I know there’s a movie coming out in the future, but I would want to tune in to watch the drama unfold weekly!
  • Mercy Thompson series- There’s so much material here, and I think producers could take the story line to the next step too. Vampires and wolves and the fae!! (Oh my!)

What books would you die to watch every week on TV??

About Lisa Parkin

I'm a hardcore lover of young adult fiction and have been reviewing books since 2011. Other interests include Downton Abbey, heat lightning storms, Harry Potter land and (begrudingly) one orange tabby.
  • Beth

They are coming out with The Secret Circle. It is from the same writer as the Vampire Diaries. In YA series, I would like to see the Blue Bloods. Although how this season of True Blood is going, I am not sure I want anymore books turned into TV series, with Game of Thrones as a exception. (Because it is awesome!)

I totally forgot about True Blood!! Good call, Beth!!

  • Ninja Girl

Oooooooh, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy!!! I would watch that every night of the week if I could. Like you said, producers could do so much with that story and the different creatures. I also think with the success of True Blood it would be a natural choice to adapt: plenty of material, great characters and writing. That’d be my pick for sure!

I think there was supposed to be a series based on Scott Westerfield’s Uglies coming out, but I haven’t heard anything about for a while…

Hope you’re having a great one,
    Ninja Girl

Thanks!!! I haven’t read those books by Scott Westerfield. I def need to! Thanks for stopping by! :)

  • Jessica S,

One I wish was made into a series is The Clique. They made a movie out of the first book, but, it’s not enough. There are too many fun schemes and crazy situations that I would love to see on a TV show. ^_^

      Ohhh, that sounds good!

  • Natalie Spaan

Totally agree on Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging! I would love to see White Cat (Curse Workers Series) be turned into a tv show! Or The Iron Fey series! The Nine Lives of Chloe King is a book series that was recently turned into a tv show :) The season just ended this week!

OMG YES!!! White Cat and Red Glove (plus eventually Black Heart) would make a great TV series- or even movies. I’m so obsessed with those books! Plus, the Iron Fey series people would freak out over!

And good call about Chloe King! I didn’t even realize that was based of a book series. :D

It’s not a YA book series, but I’d DIE if Vampire Empire got made into a TV show! It’s already so perfect for HBO, or something like that.

The “Sword of Truth” novels by Terry Goodkind became the two-season show “Legend of the Seeker.” Good show. I started reading the books to find out what happens!
