Fantastic Series Ender
YOU GUYS! I’ve been waiting for TWO YEARS for The Retribution of Mara Dyer!
This series hooked me from day one, and I’ve been frantically reading every book since because each one is chock full of intrigue, romance and dark paranormal-ness.
No pressure, Mara Dyer, series, but this book had BETTER knock it out of the park. I mean, it’s been two years. And in that time, I’ve been imagining what exactly the deal with is Mara, Noah, Jamie and Horizons. SO SPILL.
And spill it did. What I found in The Retribution of Mara Dyer was a lot of answers. Plus more questions (darn you, Hodkin), but mostly a lot of loose ends were tied up and a lot of amazing nail biting suspense scenes occurred.
Bonus: You will most likely not need to re-read the whole series to feel caught up. I forgot who a lot of people were, but everything comes to the surface in the first few chapters.
This book is sort of a paradox for me. I couldn’t put it down, and yet I was so disturbed by a lot of the images and ideas in the book. Long time readers know I’m a TOTAL wimp about horror and gore, and yet both were in this book and I read on.
What’s interesting is that in each book, Mara develops more and more. What she becomes ultimately in The Retribution of Mara Dyer is dark and powerful. I liked how Hodkin went there with the story – she didn’t hold back at all.
I also enjoyed several unexpected twists and turns, despite a few dead ends I was surprised were included. Hodkin also employed this really great detail and backstory I’ve never read in any other book. I loved how all the little details added up to create a truly creepy and enthralling story.
The only thing that kept this book from being a true standout hit was the ending. I won’t go into detail, obviously, but there is a back and forth that happens that seems dramatic but without any real purpose. It bothered me a bit, but ultimately it was easily overlooked.
I have enjoyed the Mara Dyer series so much, and I highly recommend it to fans of paranormal YA that don’t mind reading late into the night due to can’t-put-it-down-itis.
What a strong way to end the series. Just when I thought everything was resolved and done, another shocking fact would be revealed that would turn everything inside out. The whole series has been that way, and I’ve been kept on my toes by this truly inventive author. The Retribution of Mara Dyer is a strong series ender that I absolutely devoured – definitely worth the long wait.
