Discuss: What Genres Are You Absolutely Sick Of?

I tend to be a genre binger. Inside my beloved young adult genre, there are tons of categories and sub-categories. I fall in line with mostly fantasy and sci-fi books, and in THOSE categories, dystopias, magic/wizards and dystopia (still!).

But there’s a time when you just CAN’T take certain genres anymore and need your book palate to be cleansed.

What genres or categories of books would you GROAN if you had to read right now?

genres i'm tired of reading

For me, I’m just so tired of…

  • Vampires and werewolves. Together or separately – it doesn’t matter.
  • Kids killing each other. After The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner, it’s just copying.
  • Mermaids
  • Goody-goody main characters.
  • Angels as the bad guys. What a strange trend EVERYONE jumped on…

So, what’s your deal? Or, are there types of books you just can’t get ENOUGH OF?! I’d love to hear them!

About Lisa Parkin

I'm a hardcore lover of young adult fiction and have been reviewing books since 2011. Other interests include Downton Abbey, heat lightning storms, Harry Potter land and (begrudingly) one orange tabby.

I’m tired of too many supernatural creatures in one book. Fairies, witches, werewolves, vampires. I prefer one or two (just not werewolves and vamps together). Maybe acknowledge those creatures exist but we don’t need them all in one book.

Oh yeah, talk about a supernatural overload! Phew!

Anything I’ve read recently might feel a bit trite if I encounter it again too soon. I like my reading to be diverse and generally avoid reading similar-seeming books one after the other. So it’s not one specific genre, or certain concepts that I’m sick of, rather any sort of derivative, unoriginal pieces of fiction. And that is obviously relative to what else I’m reading at the time…

Sometimes I get tired of the same thing over and over again, but if there’s some variation I’m good. Which is fortunate because I read a ton of dystopian books. Thanks for your comment!

I actually think it’s been ages since I’ve read a YA book with vamps or weres in it. I’m kind of hoping for them to make a bit of a comeback, but in a darker way (see Holly Black’s Coldest Girl in Coldtown).

I’m sick to death of dystopian & post-apocalyptic books. Hopefully the trend will be over soon.

Wow, Danielle, that’s impressive! I feel like I keep seeing vamp books around every corner. I CANNOT wait for that Holly Black book! Love her!!

Also, good luck with dystopian. It’s here to stay, I think.
