Discussion Post: Fairy Tale Retellings You Want to Read the Most

I love a good fairy tale retelling and lately, I’ve read of bunch of super interesting stories. AND, there are even more coming out! Like Strands of Bronze and Gold. It’s a Bluebeard fairy tale retelling.

What are some fairy tale retellings that haven’t made the cut so far that you’d like to read?

OR

What is the most unusual retelling you’ve ever read

My top choices for more of these fairy tale retellings are:

  • Rapunzel
  • Rumpelstiltskin
  • Peter Pan
  • Hansel and Gretel (I know Sweetly came out last year, but I haven’t read it!)
  • The Prince and the Pauper
  • Sleeping Beauty (there are a ton out there, but I just want more. I love this story)

I also really like foreign or cultural stories retold – like Juliet Marillier’s celtic retellings.

For Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, and Hansel and Gretel, try Donna Jo Napoli’s bizarre fairy tell retellings.

As I was looking around on Goodreads today, I saw a couple of her books. I think I’ve read a few. Does she also have one on mermaids?

Oh I’ve not read many, but the few I have read are great and I look forward to reading more. :)

Kill Me Softly by Sarah Cross is sort of a mix of fairy tale retellings but it centers around a girl whose story is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

I just found your post here and wanted to mention I just did a retelling of Beauty & The Beast with some Celtic mythological critters running about (barghest, and gryphons, and donestres, oh my!). You can find it on amazon, kobo, and barnes & noble under “The Subtle Beauty”. I would love an honest review left on one of those sites and Goodreads.
I plan to do a retelling of The Swan Princess next, and then a retelling of Sleeping Beauty.

And then Tear You Apart by S.C. is Snow White. Also if you go to her website, she has some other short stories that are connected to the 2 books on her site.
