Every morning, Melanie waits in her cell to be collected for class. When they come for her, Sergeant Parks keeps his gun pointing at her while two of his people strap her into the wheelchair. She thinks they don’t like her. She jokes that she won’t bite, but they don’t laugh.
Melanie loves school. She loves learning about spelling and sums and the world outside the classroom and the children’s cells. She tells her favorite teacher all the things she’ll do when she grows up. Melanie doesn’t know why this makes Miss Justineau look sad.”
Not My Usually Thing
I firmly believe you should go into The Girl With All The Gifts totally blind, i.e. not having read any reviews.
So, if you like dystopias, thrillers and adult fiction, then stop reading this review and pick up a copy of this book.
If you’re like me and want a teensy bit more info, I will also tell you this: the book is definitely out of my comfort zone (descriptive violence, horror genre), BUT I will definitely say it exceeds at being a thriller and did win me over with its excellent writing and story execution.
You can tell everything about the story was well-thought out and all very conceivable.
That’s all I can say without completely ruining this story for you. Just remember the book description above is all you need.
Also, it looks like it will also be made into a movie!
I’m not sure if I enjoyed this book per se, but it was definitely an experience and one I would in fact recommend. If you’re on the fence about The Girl With All The Gifts, just go for it!
