Hot off the Press: April Releases

“Hot off the Press” is a blog feature that includes the latest releases in the Fantasy and YA genres that I think are going to totally rock. I’m doing the work of finding great new reads so you don’t have to!

Don’t forget there’s only FOUR more days until the Wither giveaway is over!!

Well, it’s a short list this week, but it’s a good one! I hope you see some books that catch your eye. 🙂

1. The Gatheringby Kelley Armstrong

Genre: Fantasy, YA

Published: April 12, 2011

Excitement Level: 9 /10- This book has the creepy factor, which I’m oddly in the mood for. Dangerous secrets and paw-print birthmarks, you say?? I think it’s high time for another gloomy, Forks-type town setting. And…GO!

Amazon Description: “Strange things are happening in Maya’s tiny Vancouver Island town. First, her friend Serena, the captain of the swim team, drowns mysteriously in the middle of a calm lake. Then, one year later, mountain lions are spotted rather frequently around Maya’s home—and her reactions to them are somewhat . . . unexpected. Her best friend, Daniel, has also been experiencing unexplainable premonitions about certain people and situations.

It doesn’t help that the new bad boy in town, Rafe, has a dangerous secret, and he’s interested in one special part of Maya’s anatomy—her paw-print birthmark.”

2.Red Gloveby Holly Black (Sequel to White Cat)

Genre: Fantasy, YA

Published: April 5, 2011

Excitement Level: 6/10- Not having read White Cat, my excitement level is high but not too high. I normally don’t feature sequels in the feature unless I’ve read them, but I can’t get away from the idea of  curseworkers who can perform “death curses, manipulating memories, and casting emotion charms.” I’m completely intrigued!!

Amazon Description: “Curses and cons. Magic and the mob. In Cassel Sharpe’s world, they go together. Cassel always thought he was an ordinary guy, until he realized his memories were being manipulated by his brothers. Now he knows the truth—he’s the most powerful curse worker around. A touch of his hand can transform anything—or anyone—into something else.

That was how Lila, the girl he loved, became a white cat. Cassel was tricked into thinking he killed her, when actually he tried to save her. Now that she’s human again, he should be overjoyed. Trouble is, Lila’s been cursed to love him, a little gift from his emotion worker mom. And if Lila’s love is as phony as Cassel’s made-up memories, then he can’t believe anything she says or does.
When Cassel’s oldest brother is murdered, the Feds recruit Cassel to help make sense of the only clue—crime-scene images of a woman in red gloves. But the mob is after Cassel too—they know how valuable he could be to them. Cassel is going to have to stay one step ahead of both sides just to survive. But where can he turn when he can’t trust anyone—least of all, himself?

Love is a curse and the con is the only answer in a game too dangerous to lose.”

3.Enclave by Ann Aguirre

Genre: Fantasy, YA

Published: April 12, 2011

Excitement Level: 7/10- I’m pretty sure I have a sickness, and it’s called “dystopian fever.” I’m eating UP all the dystopians out there right now. More, more more! Ok, I’m sure I’ll get tired of them in awhile, but I’m loving the idea of Freaks, underground communities and a rising-above-social-rejection storyline!

Amazon Description: “New York City has been decimated by war and plague, and most of civilization has migrated to underground enclaves, where life expectancy is no more than the early 20’s. When Deuce turns 15, she takes on her role as a Huntress, and is paired with Fade, a teenage Hunter who lived Topside as a young boy. When she and Fade discover that the neighboring enclave has been decimated by the tunnel monsters—or Freaks—who seem to be growing more organized, the elders refuse to listen to warnings. And when Deuce and Fade are exiled from the enclave, the girl born in darkness must survive in daylight, in the ruins of a city whose population has dwindled to a few dangerous gangs. As the two are guided by Fade’s long-ago memories, they face dangers, and feelings, unlike any they’ve ever known.”
