Hot off the Press: May Releases

“Hot off the Press” is a blog feature that includes the latest releases in the Fantasy and YA genres that I think are going to totally rock. I’m doing the work of finding great new reads so you don’t have to!

There were so many fantastic fantasy releases in May, I had to include another HOTP post! Although I’m super excited about all the amazing new books being released, I’ve got to say I’m almost nervous to read them after I devoured Divergent. It was so amazing that I’m worried other books just won’t live up to it this year…

But, I have a feeling these books will give it a run for its money!

1.Tempest Rising by Tracey Deebs

Genre: YA- Fantasy

Published: May 10, 2011

Series: 1st book in a planned trilogy

Excitement Level: 7/10- I’m really loving the surfer/beachy vibe of this book. And a”fantastical underwater world” sounds amazing!

Amazon Description: “Tempest Maguire wants nothing more than to surf the killer waves near her California home; continue her steady relationship with her boyfriend, Mark; and take care of her brothers and surfer dad. But Tempest is half mermaid, and as her seventeenth birthday approaches, she will have to decide whether to remain on land or give herself to the ocean like her mother. The pull of the water becomes as insistent as her attraction to Kai, a gorgeous surfer whose uncanny abilities hint at an otherworldly identity as well. And when Tempest does finally give in to the water’s temptation and enters a fantastical underwater world, she finds that a larger destiny awaits her-and that the entire ocean’s future hangs in the balance.”

2. Queen of Kingsby Maria Dahvana Headley

Genre: Fantasy

Published: May 12, 2011

Series: Standalone (?)

Excitement Level: 6/10- At first, the idea of Cleopatra becoming a vampire is almost too weird for me. But after letting the idea sink in, I think it’s genius! This story is orginal and unique, and I’m definitely excited to dig in!

Amazon Description: “The year is 30 BC. A messenger delivers word to Queen Cleopatra that her beloved husband, Antony, has died at his own hand. Desperate to save her kingdom and resurrect her husband, Cleopatra summons the most fearsome warrior goddess, Sekhmet, and against the warnings of her scholars she strikes a mortal bargain. But not even the wisest scholars could have predicted what would follow…

In exchange for Antony’s soul, Cleopatra is transformed into a vampiric creature of mythical proportions, an immortal shapeshifter with superhuman strength and an insatiable hunger for human blood-a being at once ferocious and seductive. And she is bent on vengeance against those who have wronged her family and her kingdom. Clashing against witches and monsters, gods and warriors, Cleopatra journeys from the tombs of Egypt to the great amphitheaters of Rome to the ancient underworld-where she will meet her love once again, and where the battle between man and beast will determine the fate of the world.”

3. Die for Me by Amy Plum

Genre: Fantasy- YA

Published: May 10, 2011

Series: 1st book in a planned series

Excitement Level: 10/10- My extreme enthusiasm is due to a couple of things. 1. The book is set in Paris 2. “Starcrossed lovers” are involved and 3. Battle royal against evil.

Amazon Description: “In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier’s parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life–and memories–behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate’s guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he’s a revenant–an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.”

4. Magic Slays by Ilona Andrews

Genre: Fantasy

Published: May 31, 2011

Series: Book 5 of the Kate Daniels series

Excitement Level: 8/10- I’ve been a fan of the Kate Daniels series for awhile, and I’m dying to find out the latest saga with Kate, her magic and her man!

Amazon Description: “Kate Daniels has quit the Order of Merciful Aid, but starting her own business isn’t easy when the Order starts disparaging her good name. And being the mate of the Beast Lord doesn’t bring in the customers, either. So when Atlanta’s premier Master of the Dead asks for help with a vampire, Kate jumps at the chance. Unfortunately, this is one case where Kate should have looked before she leapt.”
