Let’s Discuss: Books That Made Us Feel Things

In which we talk about the power of words…

discussion post young adult books

One of the highest compliments I can give a book is to say that it made me feel something. If you think about it, the fact that words on a page from someone you don’t know can evoke an emotional reaction in a stranger is pretty darn incredible.

It’s the absolute best thing about reading ever.

What books have you made that emotional connection with? AND – are there certain types of characters or situations that bring out the feels in you?

The last few books that have brought out tears and/or pure joy in me are:

  • The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner (review to come!) – so many emotions
  • Wildwood Dancing – all the swoons
  • Everything, Everything – my heart!!!!
  • The Dark Days Club – action thrills and tingly romance

When I was watching The 5th Wave, I caught myself tearing up when Sam was feeling lost and alone without Cassie. I’m SUCH a sucker for kids being sad/abandoned in books and movies.

I’m also more prone to feel emotional when a BELOVED character dies. I think we can all relate to that one though.

Also, it’s rare these days, but when a book truly surprises me or catches me off guard, I’m immediately smitten.

Your turn: what books have pulled out emotions from you and what types of things in books do you tend to react to?

About Lisa Parkin

I’m not a very emotional person, but there is one book that make me very emotional every time: Way Of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. Basically everything about Kaladin’s backstory plus almost all of the last like 100 pages has me on the verge of tears every single time I read it. The feelings! All the feelings! If I Stay by Gayle Forman is another book that almost got me to cry too.
