Let’s Discuss: Favorite Books In Other Genres

When I love something, I love it all the way, which means, I’m obviously pretty immersed in YA lit. But, I love branching out and “cleansing my palate” now and again.

I have a feeling many of you feel the same way.

Let’s Discuss: Favorite Books In Other Genres

discussion post favorite books in other genres beside ya

What books from other genres do you just love to pieces?!

I’m a big adult fantasy fan, and some of my favorites are:

  • Anything by Juliet Marillier, like Daughter of the Forest
  • The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
  • Wizard of the Grove by Tanya Huff
  • The Thirteenth House by Sharon Shinn
  • First Truth by Dawn Cook

I’m currently reading a science fiction book with one of my friends right now – The Girl With all the Gifts by M.R. Carey – and I’m thoroughly enjoying it!! Pro-tip: Do not read ANY reviews for this book. Go in blind, you’ll be happy you did.

Are there any genres you wish you read more of? What non-YA books are on your TBR?

I’ve been meaning to read: I’ve Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella, Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee (YASSS) and Armada by Ernest Cline.

DISH!!

About Lisa Parkin

I'm a hardcore lover of young adult fiction and have been reviewing books since 2011. Other interests include Downton Abbey, heat lightning storms, Harry Potter land and (begrudingly) one orange tabby.

I love romance novels. My favorite authors are Danielle Steel, Nicholas Sparks and Melissa Foster. I also love The Magical Cures series by Tonya Kappes.

  • Beth

I LOVED The Girl with All the Gifts. LOVED. It’s still with me, months later. 😀
Juliet Marillier is one of my fav authors, and I’ve been meaning to read The Name of the Wind, as so many folks recommended it to me. Same with Tanya Huff. I’m a fan of Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Dart trilogy, and Robin Hobb’s books. And anything Patrick Ness writes.

Take the same advice with Go Set a Watchman and DON’T read any reviews beforehand. People either love or hate the novel (I loved!) and it’ll mess with your opinion of the story if you have everyone else’s in your head, too.

    • DisneyAngel55

This is on my TBR list too! I was told that reading it as a stand alone book, versus a sequel to Mockingbird is best!

  • DisneyAngel55

So far this year, my favorite non YA books have been the Midnight,Texas series by Charlaine Harris (Only 2 so far, 1 of which was just released in May) and The Husband’s Secret by Liane Moriarty. I am new to Liane Moriarty and have already read 3 of her books! She is an excellent storyteller!

I’ve got Your Number was really cute. Love all of SK’s books.

(On a sidenote because it’s YA -One book that was REALLY strange while I was reading it, but still find myself months later thinking about is Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley. It is definitely a fantasy, so you may enjoy it too!)
