“Wait…what was that character’s name?” she asked 10 seconds after putting the book down.

Let’s Discuss: Forgetting Book Details

forgetting book details discussion post read breathe relax

There are very few books that I’ve read that I remember clearly and instantly the characters names. Unless they’re very memorable, or I’ve re-read the book a million times (Harry Potter) or I just really loved the book, that information is dumped from my brain immediately.

What book details do you forget? Names, places or even general plot?

I am usually pretty good with the general plot, but I’ve been known to get fuzzy on that info too, depending on how long it’s been.

Do you have a great memory for book details? Or is it more selective – only specific books or authors?

If I don’t take notes on a book I read for the blog, then it’s gone. Just gone. I’m left with a general sense of why I liked/disliked the book but not the reasons why I arrived at that feeling.

It’s torture.

So tell me: do you hold on to or forget book details?

I definitely have this problem. I have problems with remembering things. Titles. Character names. I constantly check my read shelf on GR to check things out. Then I’m like, ‘That book! -happy dances’.
It’s worse with songs. I might know the lyrics, but I can’t always remember the song name or the band/singer’s name. Whoops.
But this gets hilarious when I’m trying to remember a book, and I’m like, ‘The title…the book has cool characters. Thing thing thing.’
And my friends, who don’t really read, are like ‘Wut’.

Unless it’s a book I’m really into, yes, I forget character names quite a bit. Especially when it’s first person, so you’re not reading it very much. Some of the names in books can be so strange!

It definitely depends on how long it has been since I read the book. Usually, I can keep the main plot and characters straight, but sometimes, if I have to put a book down for a number of days, I will forget some secondary stuff – like they may mention a character and I will have NO idea who it is!
I also have a hard time when a book has been made into a movie – forgetting what exactly happened in the book compared to what they choose to put in the movie!

I totally forget details…almost immediately. I have to write my review as soon as I’m finished, or I can’t remember what I wanted to say. And I might as well forget reading a series until all the books are out, because I can’t remember a thing about book 1 if I have to wait for book 2 to come out!
