WARNING: There will be a lot of gushing in this post. Like, a lot of fangirling will be taking place. So…just prepare yourself.

Let’s Discuss: Who Are Your Auto-Buy Authors?

young adult auto buy authors

There are just some authors I love so much that I am willing to read any and all future works sight and description unseen. I mean, the image above says it all.

So here are my main questions for you:

What authors have made your coveted auto-buy list?
Is there a certain number of books you have to read by an author for them to make the list?
Has an author even been *gasp* REMOVED from your list?!

For me, my auto-buy author list is small but well-considered. They are currently as follows:

  • Leigh Bardugo
  • Kasie West
  • Jenny Han
  • Holly Black
  • Rae Carson
  • Miranda Kenneally
  • Sarah J. Maas
  • Jodi Meadows
  • Rosamund Hodge
  • Kerstin Gier
  • This seems like a lot now that I’m looking at it, but I literally read a hundred books a year. So, it’s really pretty small.

For many, I’ve read the entirety of their works, but others have only taken 2 books to persuade me to love them for life.

As for REMOVING authors from my list, I don’t think I’m actively realizing it at the time so I can really only think of one situation.

I was really into reading this epic fantasy series (adult, not YA), and the author started a new series so of course I grabby hands-it. You guys, it was SO BAD. Like, the whole time I kept expecting a twist or for SOMETHING to happen. It never did.

I think I would still buy a new release from the author, but I would be more wary and check out reviews first for sure.

    So, who made your cut?!

About Lisa Parkin

I'm a hardcore lover of young adult fiction and have been reviewing books since 2011. Other interests include Downton Abbey, heat lightning storms, Harry Potter land and (begrudingly) one orange tabby.
  • Leigh Bardugo is definitely on my must buy list. AC Gaughen – Alethea Kontis. I like Leah Cypess a lot as well and Sarah Addison Allen and Maggie Steifvater but I’d read they’re books from the library first and then buy them (except the Raven King – that I’m just buying).

The thing that makes an author must buy for me is often when I’ve met them. And especially if they’re not widely known. I like to support them because I like their writing and because I like them and I feel like it makes more of a difference than being one of millions to buy the latest best seller 🙂

I really only have one and that is Rachel Vincent. I read two of her series and she just came out with a new one and I bought it instantly. I used to have a couple other authors on the list but then I cut back on my reading when I got to college so they just started collecting dust.
I like to wait a couple books before I start buying them and Tamara Ireland Stone had one fantastic book I read. Also Gena Showalter is an instant give me, but my library normally has hers right away.

Great question — mine has seriously varied! There are series I read so I buy every new book in those but probably not everything by that author. My auto-buys are:

    Linda Howard
    Maggie Stiefvater
    Jenny Han
    Miranda Kenneally
    Tarryn Fisher
    Colleen Hoover
    Chloe Neill
    Rachel Caine
    Rosalind James
    Katherine Reay
    Jillian Dodd
    Elin Hilderbrand
    Donna Tartt
    Jessica Park
    Tiffanie DeBartolo

That’s not too bad considering I read over 200 books every year

  • I don’t necessarily have auto-buy authors, but I do have two auto-buy series:

    Magical Cures by Tonya Kappes
    Seaside Summers by Melissa Foster

My auto authors – Barry Lyga, Holly Black, Matt de la Pena, Lauren Oliver, Neal Shusterman, Marissa Meyers, Gayle Forman and Jandy Nelson.

  • Anne Bishop is my #1 auto-buy, for over a decade now. Also, Rick Riordan, Kristen Britain, Sarah J. Maas, Michelle Sagara, Maria V. Snyder, Kevin Hearne, and Cinda Williams Chima, and Bill Willingham’s Fables series. I used to work in a bookstore and had tons of auto-buys, but since I became a librarian, I mostly go through the library to get books. I have to be really blown away by a writer in order to want to buy them now. I just don’t have the space in my apartment for more! I have started collecting two new authors recently, because I LOVED their stuff so much, so anything new from them will probably become an auto-buy from here on out: Ilona Andrews and Nalini Singh.
