YA Fantasy Releases in July 2011

I heard a fun fact the other day that really caught my attention: July 2011 is considered to be a “money bags” month based on Chinese Feng Shui because July has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays and 5 Sundays.

For many of us, that means we will get paid THREE times this month! According to a few articles I read, a month like this only occurs once every 800 years!

Fourth of July Fireworks!

Don’t get too excited…Snopes.com debunked that myth. They always have to ruin they fun, don’t they? Money bags months really occur every five to six years, but I won’t let that stop me from getting pumped about July. Some pretty amazing things have already happening for me.

Like being the featured blog Parajunkee’s Follow Friday past this past week, celebrating my hub’s birthday in a few weeks, and seeing the hilarious comedian Jim Gaffigan at the end of the month!

Plus- some amazing books have already been released this month and more are coming very soon! Check out the books I think are the “moniest bags” of them all (click on the book titles to add them on Goodreads):

I’m gonna liiiiive foreeeeeever, I’m gonna fill my tiiiiights’ summer course things are bound to perk up. Especially when the boys arrive. (When DO the boys arrive?) Six weeks of parent-free freedom. Soon, she will find herself lost in a mystery and fighting to keep all she’s gained, as Lazarus, a vampire, threatens to take it all away.”

4. Winter’s Shadow by M.J. Hearle

Description: “Blake Duchamp…

He’s all that Winter Adams can think of. Ever since their fateful meeting at Pilgrim’s Lament. Ever since he looked at her with those emerald eyes. Ever since he saved her life.

In his attic is a secret he would kill to defend, but Winter seems to have a special ability to make him forget his duty. And he is her only protection against the gathering darkness.

The only problem is, to protect Winter, Blake must risk exposing her to an even greater danger. Himself.”

5. Anathema by K.A. Tucker

Release Date: July 15

Description: “Evangeline has spent her teenage years in obscurity. Her foster parents have the emotional aptitude of robots and her classmates barely acknowledge her existence. About to turn eighteen and feeling like a social pariah, she is desperate to connect with someone. Anyone.

When Evangeline meets Sofie after literally stumbling upon her cafe, she believes she’s found that connection. Willing to do anything to keep it, she accepts a job as Sofie’s assistant and drops everything to fly to Manhattan, where she is thrust into a luxurious world of Prada, diamonds, and limitless cash.

With such generosity and kindness, it’s easy for Evangeline to dismiss certain oddities . . . like Sofie’s erratic and sometimes violent behavior, and the monstrous guard dogs. She’s even willing to dismiss her vivid dreams of mob-style murders, beautiful homeless people living in caves, and white-eyed demons that haunt her each night as figments of her imagination especially when one of those figments is the gorgeous Caden. When she wakes up with bite marks on her neck, the fairy tale quickly turns into a nightmare. She slowly unravels the mystery surrounding Sofie and friends, and the reality of the bites and the dreams.

Waiting on Wednesday: A Need So Beautiful by Suzanne Young

Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that bloggers are eagerly anticipating.

Normally, I try not to include books that have already received a lot of buzz in my WOW posts. I mean, people already know about them if there’s a buzz right?

I made an exception with this book, though. It sounds too great to not make sure EVERYONE knows about it!

Title & Author: A Need So Beautifulby Suzanne Young

Genre: YA- Fantasy

Publication Date: June 21, 2011

Description: ”We all want to be remembered. Charlotte’s destiny is to be forgotten.

Charlotte’s best friend thinks Charlotte might be psychic. Her boyfriend thinks she’s cheating on him. But Charlotte knows what’s really wrong: She is one of the Forgotten, a kind of angel on earth who feels the Need—a powerful, uncontrollable draw to help someone, usually a stranger.

But Charlotte never wanted this responsibility. What she wants is to help her best friend, whose life is spiraling out of control. She wants to lie in her boyfriend’s arms forever. But as the Need grows stronger, it begins to take a dangerous toll on Charlotte. And who she was, is, and will become—her mark on this earth, her very existence—is in jeopardy of disappearing completely.

Charlotte will be forced to choose: Should she embrace her fate as a Forgotten, a fate that promises to rip her from the lives of those she loves forever? Or is she willing to fight against her destiny—no matter how dark the consequences?”

Why I’m Stoked: Fighting against destiny and struggling with who you are are popular themes in YA books, and I really like the spin this book puts on it. I also like the fresh take on angels that have dominated the pages of new releases.

Waiting on Wednesday: Sleepless by Cyn Balog

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that bloggers are eagerly anticipating.

Title & Author: Sleeplessby Cyn Balog

Genre: Fantasy, YA

Publication Date: July 12, 2011 (Not too far away!)

Description: “Eron DeMarchelle isn’t supposed to feel this connection. He is a Sandman, a supernatural being whose purpose is to seduce his human charges to sleep. Though he can communicate with his charges in their dreams, he isn’t encouraged to do so. After all, becoming too involved in one human’s life could prevent him from helping others get their needed rest.

But he can’t deny that he feels something for Julia, a lonely girl with fiery red hair and sad dreams. Just weeks ago, her boyfriend died in a car accident, and Eron can tell that she feels more alone than ever. Eron was human once too, many years ago, and he remembers how it felt to lose the one he loved. In the past, Eron has broken rules to protect Julia, but now, when she seems to need him more than ever, he can’t reach her. Eron’s time as a Sandman is coming to a close, and his replacement doesn’t seem to care about his charges. Worse, Julia is facing dangers she doesn’t recognize, and Eron, as he transitions back to being human, may be the only one who can save her. . . .

Even once they’ve become human again, Sandmen are forbidden to communicate with their charges. But Eron knows he won’t be able to forget Julia. Will he risk everything for a chance to be with the girl he loves?”

Why I’m Stoked: I’ve heard of a few other books that involve “sandmen,” but none have peaked my interest like this book. I love it when a story takes something that I take for granted (like sleeping) and turns it into something more exciting (like falling in love). Also, I love the cover- it’s very Twilight-esque!

What are you dying to read this week?

Waiting on Wednesday: The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

“Waiting On Wednesday” is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that bloggers are eagerly anticipating.

Title & Author: The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson

Genre: YA

Publication Date: September 20, 2011

Description: ”Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness.

Elisa is the chosen one.

But she is also the younger of two princesses, the one who has never done anything remarkable. She can’t see how she ever will.

Now, on her sixteenth birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king—a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs the chosen one, not a failure of a princess.

And he’s not the only one who seeks her. Savage enemies seething with dark magic are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people’s savior. And he looks at her in a way that no man has ever looked at her before. Soon it is not just her life, but her very heart that is at stake.

Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn’t die young.

Most of the chosen do.”

Why I’m Stoked: I’m a fan of the underdog, and Elisa certainly seems like one! She was never supposed to be the princess who took the spotlight, but now she must to save her kingdom. I normally like a side of fantasy with my YA, but this story sounds fantastic enough on it’s own!

What’s your pick?

Waiting on Wednesday: Divergent by Veronica Roth

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that bloggers are eagerly anticipating.

Before I launch into my Waiting on Wednesday pick, I wanted to let everyone know you can still enter to win the GIVEAWAY I’m hosting of Wither by Lauren DeStefano! All entries must be submitted by Monday, April 18th!

Divergent by Veronica Roth

Title & Author: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Genre: YA, Fantasy

Publication Date: May 3, 2011

Description: “In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series—dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance.”

Why I’m Stoked: I’ve been on a serious dystopian kick lately and can’t get enough!! (Cue the Black Eyed Peas song) I think Divergent takes a really interesting turn with the end-of-the-world shtick by including factions with special virtues. I love all the hidden family secrets aspect, which reminds me of the book I just reviewed, Coronets and Steel.

What book is tickling your fancy this week? :)
