Discuss: Best Book to Movie Adaption of 2013?

With the year almost half over (agh!!!), many fantastic book to movie adaptions have already hit the silver screen! What are your favorite book to movie films so far?

Discuss: Best Book to Movie Adaptions of 2013

Between reading books and seeing the the movies they were made into, there’s little free time to spare this year. There were a handful of YA book to movies that I’ve been dying to see, but haven’t had a chance yet.

What did you think of these book to movie films: Beautiful Creatures, Warm Bodies, The Host, The Hobbit (technically 2012 but whatevs)?? Did they hold true to the book or veer off wildly? Did you like the casting choices?

My top picks (of the movies I’ve actually seen so far this year are):

My Top Book to Movie Adaptions (so far):

The Host

Book to movie 2013

Acting: (Full movie review here). Saoirse Ronan was a much better actress than Kristen Stewart by a long shot. She’s vulnerable and…has an emotional range besides sad and frowning.

That being said, this wasn’t the greatest movie ever. In was mediocre with some really great moments. I went into the movie thinking I’d definitely want to read the book afterward, but I didn’t leave feeling the same way. The movie totally sufficed it for me, and I left relatively happy.

Accuracy to Book: As I said, I didn’t read the book on this one. But, my lovely friend, Catilin, did and said that the movie was pretty accurate to the book.

Overall: There were a lot of tricky moments during this movie – especially the whole person inside a person bit. I think the movie handled it really well, and I think this is the best adaption of a Stephenie Meyer book yet. :)

The Great Gatsby

book to movie the great gatsby

Acting: I thought the acting in The Great Gatsby was fantastic. I’m a huge fan of Leo’s, and ever since I saw Carey Mulligan in Pride and Prejudice and An Education, I was totally won over.

On the other hand, I can take or leave Toby McGuire. He always seems like the side-kick type to me.

Accuracy to Book: Again, I haven’t read this book. (What use am I today?). But, this article by Slate does a great job of giving a run down.

I can tell you one thing: there are a ton of anachronistic details dusted throughout the whole film. I personally didn’t mind it because it reminded me a lot of today, so having a Jay-Z song playing in a Speakeasy only served to remind me how current times not that different from the excess of the Roaring 20s.

Overall: This movie definitely had it’s ups and downs – and let’s be honest, it’s super sad – but, it was visually stunning and made me think long after the credits were rolling.

Anxiously Waiting For Book to Movie Adaptions:

Catching fire book to movie 2013

Catching Fire

How do I even describe my excitement for this movies? I totally loved the first Hunger Games movie, so my expectations for this one are HIGH.

I’m wondering how they’re going to handle Finnick and the developing romance between Katniss and Peeta (with some Gale mixed in). I’m not feeling the romantic tension so far, but I’m reserving my judgement till after this movie.

Ender’s Game

I am promising myself I’ll read the book before this movie comes out. I’ve got some time – this book to movie adaption doesn’t come out until November. I’m not really sure what to expect from either the book or the movie, so it’s all fair game to me.

Second Hobbit movie

Ok, please don’t judge me, but…I still need to see the first Hobbit movie! I KNOW, I KNOW! I hate myself too. I’m excited to see what Peter Jackson came up with again, but I’m worried about the breakage of one book into three movies. It seems a little extreme, no?

Other book to movie adaptions to look out for: Percy Jackson, World War Z, Mortal Instruments.

Divergent Movie News!!

Ok so, how have we not talked about the Divergent movie?! I know I’ve been a bit MIA lately, but this is no excuse!

I’ll start with the big news, Mr. Pamuk from Season 1 Downton Abbey is playing Tobias aka Four in the movie adaptation of Veronica Roth’s Divergent! MR. PAMUK, people!!

Divergent Movie News

Let’s start with the basic info:

Release Date: March 21, 2014

Confirmed Actors:

  • Tris: Shailiene Woodley
  • Four: Theo James
  • Christina (Tris’ best friend): Zoe Kravitz (Lenny Kravitz’s daughter!)

What do you think of the casting so far?!

So far, I’m SO HAPPY with the choices for Tris and Tobias. I think these are solid actors…well, ok, I’ve only seen Theo James act in Downton Abbey. But, I think that speaks for itself. lol

The only thing that’s killing me so far is the wait. March of next year?! Agh, kill me now.

What do you think about the latest Divergent movie developments??

Movie Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an amazing novel that my friend Christina let me borrow in college. It was such a memorable read, and I think my friend and I may have even created some mix tapes.

Sometimes a movie totally and completely incapsulates the book it’s based off of. It’s a rare breed, but sometimes it magically happens. I think for The Perks of Being a Wallflower, the right mix of aesthetics, scripts and actors came together to create something really amazing.

Movie Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Book

So, I’ve pretty obviously stated that I LOVED this movie, so now let me tell you why. First of all, The Perks of Being a Wallflower as a book is compelling – which means the movie had a lot to work with. That doesn’t guarantee that a book-to-movie conversion always works well (hello Eragon), but it gives it a fighting chance.

If you haven’t read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, please do. It follows the life of Charlie. A high school freshman who has trouble conversing with others, loves to read classic literature and is just trying to make some friends. I loved Charlie right from the beginning in both the book and the movie.

What a cutie!

The Movie

Full disclosure: I read The Perks of Being a Wallflower when I was a freshman in college. Which was roughly 7 years ago. I cannot vouch for the authenticity of the movie keeping all of the nitty gritty details from the book, but I can say that the whole story was represented.

I didn’t get the sense that anything major was left out. If there was and you know it, please feel free to comment and let me know what was missing!

If we’re going to look at the movie as a separate entity from the book altogether (this is a common “this was NOT like the book” coping mechanism I use), The Perks of Being a Wallflower definitely still holds its weight.

Emma Watson and Logan Lerman deliver stunningly authentic portrayal of the highs and lows of high school and self-discovery. Charlie (Logan Lerman) is adorably awkward and bumbling. He’s shy and hesitant. He’s so smart that he asks for extra reading from his English teacher – dorky and admirable.

More than once, I found myself wanting to hug him and tell him that life after high school gets so much better. What makes Charlie’s story so much more than just another high school coming of age tale is that he deals with so many issues – like death, sexuality and drugs.

These complexities only served to add depth and richness to the story and keep me riveted the whole time.

Plus, I must give a shoutout to the actor who played Patrick. SO FUNNY! I loved the (necessary) comedic relief that kept things fairly light.

OVERALL:

Do yourself a favor – read the book, then watch the movie. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is amazing in both forms, and I sincerely hope you love it as much as I did!!

Awesome Quotes

This book has some gorgeously profound quotes, and you know the Pinner in me had to share. ;)

Anna Karenina Movie Trailer

On this lazy Sunday, I am enthralled with this Anna Karenina movie trailer.

The movie will be released November 9 2012 and is starring Keira Knightley and Jude Law. Need I say more?

Authors Who Hated the Movie Versions of Their Books (Mental Floss)

One of my friends told me about this article on Mental Floss about authors who hated the movie versions of their books.

Authors Who Hated the Movie Versions of Their Books

For those of you who just want a quick run down, the authors and movies are:

  • P.L. Travers and Mary Poppins
  • Stephen King and The Shining
  • Anne Rice and Interview with a Vampire
  • Winston Groom and Forrest Gump
  • Clive Cussler and Sahara
  • J.D. Salinger and Ugly Willy in Connecticut/My Foolish Heart
  • Anthony Burgess and The Clockwork Orange
  • Brett Easton Ellis and The Informers
  • Roald Dahl and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (the Gene Wilder one)
  • Ken Kesey and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
  • Richard Matheson and I Am Legend (all of the remakes)
willa wonka and the chocolate facotory

First of all, I didn’t realize a few of these movies were originally books, like Mary Poppins and Forrest Gump. Also, Stephen King basically implied The Shining wasn’t scary enough….Um what?? God help us from his mind!!

Also, I saw Sahara….and yeah, it wasn’t that good. :/ Also, I wonder what Roald Dahl would have thought of the 2005 version of his book with Johnny Depp AND the Wes Anderson take on Fantastic Mr. Fox (<--One of my FAVE movies).

As for me, here’s my top list of books that I liked better than the movies (ie this could be a very long list, so I’m going to limit myself to 5):

  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (the 6th book) – This book was one of my favorites in the series, and I was disappointed in this movie.
  • Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine – I was obsessed with this book in 6th grade, and although the movie is cute, it didn’t do the book justice at all.
  • Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit – Again, the movie was just ok. This book was one of my favorites growing up, so I had a ton of expectations for the movie.
  • Eragon by Christopher Paolini – Ugh. For those of you who have even seen this movie, it was really, really bad. Which is probably why they never made the rest of the books into movies.
  • Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak – I know we’re talking about a 20-ish page book here, but the movies was SO WEIRD. I think they were really trying to expand the storyline and it just messed with the whole vibe of the book. The only good thing was the soundtrack with Arcade Fire.

Your turn! Name some books you liked waaaay better than the movie!
