Description:

“Knowing the outcome doesn’t always make a choice easier . . .

Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?” As a Searcher, whenever Addie is faced with a choice, she can look into the future and see both outcomes. It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with—her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.

In one potential future, Addie is adjusting to life outside the Compound as the new girl in a Norm high school where she meets Trevor, a cute, sensitive artist who understands her. In the other path, Addie is being pursued by the hottest guy in school—but she never wanted to be a quarterback’s girlfriend. When Addie’s father is asked to consult on a murder in the Compound, she’s unwittingly drawn into a dangerous game that threatens everything she holds dear. With love and loss in both lives, it all comes down to which reality she’s willing to live through . . . and who she can’t live without.”

Two Paths Diverged in a Wood

Pivot Point is genius. It combines fun YA paranormal abilities with an interesting perspective on making decisions in a real-life choose your own adventure story.

Addison is part of a super-secret paranormal community that exists within the confines of the “regular” or normal world. People in the compound can move things with their minds, persuade others to do their bidding, or in her case, see and live both paths of a situation when she’s faced with a choice.

Although she’s never thought it was an overly stunning gift, she’s thankful for it when she faces one of the biggest decisions of her life – stay with her mom in the compound OR leave with her dad to go into the normal world.

Knowing she needs to find out what will be the better choice, Addison “searches” her future – essentially living out both choices at once (although it doesn’t feel that way to her).

Each chapter of the book after Addison searches alternates between her two paths. You would think it would get confusing, but Kasie West does a great job of keeping things clear and on track.

What I loved about Pivot Point was the originality of the story – this isn’t something I’ve ever read before. Plus, it plays with the idea of making always knowing the right thing to do and if fate really exists.

He shrugs.”Doesn’t help to waste my time thinking about would’ve beens.” Laila whispers,”He says to the girl with a mind full of them.”

The writing is witty and charming. Addie has an amazing sense of humor and a wholly authenticate teen voice.

OVERALL:

What an amazing surprise. I loved, loved, LOVED this book, and I hope you do to. Pivot Point is definitely in the contenders for one of my favorite books of 2013 – highly recommended.

Discussion Post: Zombie Books

I’m sure you’ve noticed the influx of zombie books, movies and games. It seems the trend is only growing in popularity.

I’ve only dabbled in the zombie realm, so I’m hoping you’ll give me the needed insight to understand the trend for the dead.

Discussion Post: Zombie Books

While watching the movie previews before Breaking Dawn Part 2, I saw a preview for Warm Bodies – the latest book-turned-movie adaption.

Warm Bodies is a zombie romance, and the movie trailer was enough to convince me to read the book. It looked funny, cute and sweetly romantic.

This made me want to open my limited zombie experience a bit wider and give this emerging trend a try.

Warm Bodies Movie Trailer

Yay or Nay?

So what’s your verdict?

What zombie books or movies have you read? IF zombies are the new vampire, how do you feel about this shift?

A few popular zombie books I’ve seen and am interested in are:

  • Dearly Departed
  • Something Strange and Deadly
  • The Forest of Hands and Teeth
  • This is Not a Test
  • Cold Kiss
  • Undeadly
  • Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

Plus, movie and TV-wise there’s the highly-addictive Walking Dead, Legend and World War Z.

Whether you hate them or love them, zombies and zombie books are here to stay.

How I Got the Book: Bought

Description:

One hour to rewrite the past . . .

For seventeen-year-old Emerson Cole, life is about seeing what isn’t there: swooning Southern Belles; soldiers long forgotten; a haunting jazz trio that vanishes in an instant. Plagued by phantoms since her parents’ death, she just wants the apparitions to stop so she can be normal. She’s tried everything, but the visions keep coming back.

So when her well-meaning brother brings in a consultant from a secretive organization called the Hourglass, Emerson’s willing to try one last cure. But meeting Michael Weaver may not only change her future, it may change her past.
Who is this dark, mysterious, sympathetic guy, barely older than Emerson herself, who seems to believe every crazy word she says? Why does an electric charge seem to run through the room whenever he’s around? And why is he so insistent that he needs her help to prevent a death that never should have happened?

Full of atmosphere, mystery, and romance, Hourglass merges the very best of the paranormal and science-fiction genres in a seductive, remarkable young adult debut.”

Hourglass = Cutsy > Creepy

Hourglass is like a lot of paranormal YA books out right now – it’s taking a different spin on the idea of creepy abilities. These novels (like Shatter Me and Everneath) are giving paranormal abilities some oomph by adding in crazy twists and caveats. Hourglass took the more interesting route – but with some typical plot twists and not-so-instalove.

From the description above, I thought Hourglass was going to be more like The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer – creepy and spooky. I mean, Emerson sees dead people…everywhere. What’s not supposed to be spooky about that?

What I got instead of spookiness was more along the lines of an average YA – love triangles and jealousy galore. That aspect of Hourglass kinda disappointed me. I was thinking it might be free of some of the ever-present themes in YA.

It’s my own fault for having weird expectations, but the premise can only tell you so much without ruining the book. Fortunately, this book had a fantastic main character, Emerson (love that name!!).

Emerson FTW!

Emerson has endured a lot in her life. Both of her parents died in a freak accident, and she’s accepted the fact that she’s crazy. Bat shizz crazy. She feels real and spunky and I appreciated her wicked sense of humor.

I also liked her because she seems so vulnerable and in need of help. Plus her awesome brother Thomas and his wife Dru seemed like people I would be friends with in real life.

Another great aspecto of Emerson’s abilities is that she the ghosts she sees are old-timey, like a debutante from the Old South and jazz musicians from the 40s. It added a intriguing spin on the whole “I see dead people” schtick.

As for the romance and love triangles in the book – it’s good but I wasn’t swooning. Both of the guys annoyed me at different times. But, one is clearly a better choice for Emerson. I hope YOU figure out which boy it is! And ultimately agree with me, of course. :)

OVERALL:

I enjoyed Hourglass, but it was sort of middle of the road for me. Not super amazing but not super terrible either. Hourglass had great central characters that brought the story to life but unoriginal plot devices and romances dulled things back down.

Title & Author: The Gathering Storm by Katerina Alexandrovna

Genre: YA- Historical + Paranormal

Publication Date: January 10, 2012

Description: St. Petersburg, Russia, 1888. As she attends a whirl of glittering balls, royal debutante Katerina Alexandrovna, Duchess of Oldenburg, tries to hide a dark secret: she can raise the dead. No one knows. Not her family. Not the girls at her finishing school. Not the tsar or anyone in her aristocratic circle. Katerina considers her talent a curse, not a gift. But when she uses her special skill to protect a member of the Imperial Family, she finds herself caught in a web of intrigue.

An evil presence is growing within Europe’s royal bloodlines—and those aligned with the darkness threaten to topple the tsar. Suddenly Katerina’s strength as a necromancer attracts attention from unwelcome sources . . . including two young men—George Alexandrovich, the tsar’s standoffish middle son, who needs Katerina’s help to safeguard Russia, even if he’s repelled by her secret, and the dashing Prince Danilo, heir to the throne of Montenegro, to whom Katerina feels inexplicably drawn.

The time has come for Katerina to embrace her power, but which side will she choose—and to whom will she give her heart?

Why I’m Stoked: I’m really interested in historical fiction at the moment, so this book appeals to me for so many reasons. I am really fascinated by Russian royalty and this book has enough fantasy, action and intrigue to tempt me!

Also, can I pleaseeeee have a hat and coat like hers?!

Are you interested in any historical and/or paranormal books like The Gathering Storm?

How I Got the Book:Bought

Description:

“Mara Dyer doesn’t believe life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there. It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her strangely unharmed. There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love. She’s wrong.

Chilling, Suspenseful & Stunning

Sometimes going into a book totally blind is the biggest favor you can give yourself.

I think about when I saw the movie Inception- my husband and I went to see that movie knowing nothing about it other than a few, very brief ads in theaters. I believe that part of what blew my mind about Inception was not knowing too much about it up front.

Maybe you can see where this is going- other than what you read in the description, I’m not going to tell you anything about The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. It’s not to torture you, it’s to do you a FAVOR.

However, I will give you the following advice:

  • Finish the book you’re reading quickly. I’m talking warp speed. Ok…who are we kidding? PUT IT DOWN RIGHT NOW. Don’t finish it. It won’t be as good as The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer.
  • Don’t read anything else about the book than the description. I’m begging you! Groveling!
  • Grab the following: A Pillow. A blanket. A cup of tea/coffe (maybe some pie for good measure). Your favorite couch/chair/bed. NOW GO!

Overall:

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer has officially made my best books of 2011 list.I absolutely fell in love with the story, the writing and, most of all, Mara Dyer and her past and future. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer is the type of story that takes a hold of you and doesn’t let go.
