Renegade by J.A. Souders

renegade by j.a. souders

Title & Author: Renegade by J.A. Souders

Genre: YA- Fantasy

Publication Date: November 2012

Description: “Since the age of three, sixteen-year-old Evelyn Winters has been trained to be Daughter of the People in the underwater utopia known as Elysium. Selected from hundreds of children for her ideal genes all her life she’s thought that everything was perfect; her world. Her people. The Law.

But when Gavin Hunter, a Surface Dweller, accidentally stumbles into their secluded little world, she’s forced to come to a startling realization: everything she knows is a lie. Her memories have been altered. Her mind and body aren’t under her own control. And the person she knows as Mother is a monster.

Together with Gavin she plans her escape, only to learn that her own mind is a ticking time bomb… and Mother has one last secret that will destroy them all.”

Why I’m Stoked: I’m super interested in this book because it doesn’t sound like anything I’ve read before. I love the spin on a utopia that’s not everything it seems and the rebellion/fighting the man aspect. Plus, it’s totally reminding me of Sydney Bristow from Alias – finding out everything you believed in is a lie! Love it!

Genre: YA- Fantasy

Publication Date: November 2012

Description: “Sixteen-year-old Neryn is alone in the land of Alban, where the oppressive king has ordered anyone with magical strengths captured and brought before him. During her dangerous journey, she receives aid from the Good Folk, who tell her she must pass a series of tests in order to recognize her full potential. She also finds help from a handsome young man, Flint, who rescues her from certain death–but whose motives in doing so remain unclear. Neryn struggles to trust her only allies. They both hint that she alone may be the key to Alban’s release from Keldec’s rule. Homeless, unsure of who to trust, and trapped in an empire determined to crush her, Neryn must make it to Shadowfell not only to save herself, but to save Alban.”

Why I’m Stoked: I have read ALL of Juliet Marillier’s books and have loved each of them. I am so excited to see that Shadowfell is a crossover YA/Fantasy book, and I think the premise sounds awesome. It has everything: excitement, adventure, romance. I’m so sold on this that it’s ridiculous!

Waiting on Wednesday: Grave Mercy by R.L. LaFevers

Convent + assassins + adventure = Grave Mercy. It sounds weird enough to be awesome!

Grave Mercy by R.L. LaFevers

grave mercy by r.l. lafevers

Title & Author: Grave Mercy by R.L. LaFevers

Genre: YA- Fantasy & Historical Fiction

Publication Date: April 3, 2012

Description: ‘Why be the sheep, when you can be the wolf?

Seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes from the brutality of an arranged marriage into the sanctuary of the convent of St. Mortain, where the sisters still serve the gods of old. Here she learns that the god of Death Himself has blessed her with dangerous gifts—and a violent destiny. If she chooses to stay at the convent, she will be trained as an assassin and serve as a handmaiden to Death. To claim her new life, she must destroy the lives of others.

Ismae’s most important assignment takes her straight into the high court of Brittany—where she finds herself woefully under prepared—not only for the deadly games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. For how can she deliver Death’s vengeance upon a target who, against her will, has stolen her heart?”

Why I’m Stoked: Grave Mercy combines some really odd elements, like a convent with assassins! I love unusual things like that being paired up and think the storyline can support them. Plus, who can say no to court intrigue and stolen hearts? Not me, that’s for sure!

Title & Author: The Gathering Storm by Katerina Alexandrovna

Genre: YA- Historical + Paranormal

Publication Date: January 10, 2012

Description: St. Petersburg, Russia, 1888. As she attends a whirl of glittering balls, royal debutante Katerina Alexandrovna, Duchess of Oldenburg, tries to hide a dark secret: she can raise the dead. No one knows. Not her family. Not the girls at her finishing school. Not the tsar or anyone in her aristocratic circle. Katerina considers her talent a curse, not a gift. But when she uses her special skill to protect a member of the Imperial Family, she finds herself caught in a web of intrigue.

An evil presence is growing within Europe’s royal bloodlines—and those aligned with the darkness threaten to topple the tsar. Suddenly Katerina’s strength as a necromancer attracts attention from unwelcome sources . . . including two young men—George Alexandrovich, the tsar’s standoffish middle son, who needs Katerina’s help to safeguard Russia, even if he’s repelled by her secret, and the dashing Prince Danilo, heir to the throne of Montenegro, to whom Katerina feels inexplicably drawn.

The time has come for Katerina to embrace her power, but which side will she choose—and to whom will she give her heart?

Why I’m Stoked: I’m really interested in historical fiction at the moment, so this book appeals to me for so many reasons. I am really fascinated by Russian royalty and this book has enough fantasy, action and intrigue to tempt me!

Also, can I pleaseeeee have a hat and coat like hers?!
