TGIF: Gateway Books to New Genres

TGIF is a blog meme started by GReadsBooks.com! This feature re-caps the week’s posts and propose a question for followers.

TGIF Question: Gateway Books: Which particular books opened you up to a new genre?

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Answer: Even though it’s not technically a genre, Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder opened me up to YA-aged characters who didn’t have YA-ish lives. Books that had more fantasy and less high school/angsty issues going on.

I’ve found books like The Girl of Fire and Thorns and currently The Pledge that are similar in that style of book to the amazing Poison Study.

Also, Sunshine by Robin McKinley made me feel comfortable with urban/paranormal fantasy. I thought this genre was so weird for the longest time, but I really loved McKinley’s novel. The rest is history. 😀

About Lisa Parkin

I'm a hardcore lover of young adult fiction and have been reviewing books since 2011. Other interests include Downton Abbey, heat lightning storms, Harry Potter land and (begrudingly) one orange tabby.

What a beautiful cover! I’ve been meaning to read Poison Study for a while now. Happy Friday! 🙂

  • I loved reading Poison Study, but I really hated the last book in the trilogy … I found it to be really boring. However, I agree with you–it’s nice to see books where they don’t lead YA lives (like the House of Night ones). A breath of fresh air!

    Happy TGIF! 🙂

  • I *love* the Study series! I’m very interested in checking out her other series, including the new Healer series. Snyder’s writing is just fantastic! Just finished the Pledge (loved it, as well) and can’t wait to start The Girl of Fire and Thorns, which has been on my pile since it came out, waiting for me to find the time for it.

    Happy TGIF!!!

    • Jeannette! We’re book twins! haha, I’m reading The Pledge too and am almost finished! I’m loving it!

Also, Synder’s new Power series is on NetGalley (if you didn’t know already). I’m SO excited about starting that book next.

I hope you enjoy The Girl of Fire and Thorns too- I thought it was fantastic!
