Top Ten Book Endings that Left Me with my Mouth Hanging Open

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish! You can join the fun too by hopping over to the site and checking out their post!

I haven’t done this meme in awhile, and I miss it! So let’s get this party started, shall we? Just fyi, I don’t read a lot of scary or suspenseful books, so this list just qualifies what I think is shocking or surprising- however wimpy that may be. (i.e. very wimpy).

Top Ten Book Endings that Left Me with my Mouth Hanging Open

city of bones by cassandra claire

1Divergent by Veronica Roth— My mouth was hanging open from the sheer awesomeness of this book. The ending was pretty crazy too, but overall, I was salivating. (Sorry for that mental image… 😀 )

2Legacy by Cayla Kluver—For some reason, I just didn’t see the ending of this book coming. Like, at all.

3The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson—I just finished this book last night, and it was fantastic! It rocked so hard, but it’s intense and crazy all at the same time.

4The Restorer by Amanda Stevens— I was creeped out so much by this book, but the ending really took me over the edge. If you like suspenseful books that mainly take place in cemeteries, then this book is for you. Meanwhile, even writing about this book will give me nightmares tonight. *shivers*

5City of Bones by  Cassandra Claire— I was devastated and thralled by this ending. I knew it would get fixed somehow, but I was in shock trying to cope with everything!

6The Sweet Far Thing by  Libbra Bray—This is the 3rd book in the Gemma Doyle series and it had me reeling. I seriously couldn’t have guessed the ending of this book in a million years.

7Mockingjay by  Suzanne Collins— I probably don’t need to explain this one too much. It’s just crazy! 172 days till the movie…but who’s counting…

8The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N.K. Jemsin— What a strange, strange little book. My mouth was hanging open from confusion, boredom and awe at the weirdness I’d just endured.

9Mistborn by  Brandon Sanderson— What a fantastic book! I haven’t read the rest of the series, but the surprise ending of this book was a-mazing!!

10Going after Cacciato by Tim O’Brien—  I had to read this book in high school, and the end wasn’t totally expected but it still caught me off-guard. It is a brutal but moving book.

What book ending has left you with your mouth hanging open?

I was completely shocked by the twist in Girl of Fire and Thorns. Came out of nowhere. City of Bones was a big surprise too.

Lol, I’m not counting for the Hunger Games movie, either. :) I totally forgot about Divergent. That ending was crazy. And it’s been awhile since I read City of Bones, but that was really unexpected, too.

That’s a great list of books. Other than Mockingjay, I haven’t read a single one.

I put Divergent on my list too. I also put a Cassie Clare book on my list too.

Ha ha! I felt the exact same way about the ending of City of Bones. I was a tad bit spoiled because I had heard there was a series with that ending, but I didn’t know it was City of Bones. So, when I found out it was, my reaction was, “No, not them!”

Man, I almost want to go back and add Divergent to my list. Good one!

Divergent was so good! I enjoyed it so much and now I’m dying to read Insurgent.

ooh, I haven’t read some of these, the restorer particularly sounds good, especially as it is halloween!

You really have to read the rest of the mist born series! Such an amazing world, I love the magic that Sanderson created (I wish I could use allomancy! It seems like such a realistic superpower, no?) Plus, the 4th one is coming out soon. SOO can’t wait!

  • Melissa Hayden

Yep, totally agree with City of Bones! I’m sooooo glad I didn’t read the book until after all three where out. 😉 I don’t know if I would have been able to wait for the second book after that ending. hee hee. And Hunger Games was another one. Really great picks here!

Great book ending list. Mockingjay had a good ending. What do you think about The Woman in Black ending? Thanks.
