I could only think of 7 words and topics I flatly say no to. I’m pretty strict with them though. I do try to keep an open mind, so I’ll never say never.
…Did I just quote a Justin Bieber song? Yeah, that’s pretty much how today is going.

Top Ten Words/Topics That Will Make Me Not Pick up a Book
1Cheating/affairs– This is one topic that I have absolutely no desire to read about when it comes to cheating/affairs being glorified. If it happens in a book but isn’t the focus, that’s fine, but as the main story of the book, no thanks.
2Lack of any romance– So, this is more like the absence of words that make me avoid picking up a book. I want at least a little chemistry or something. Throw a girl a bone!
3Physical abuse/abusive relationships– I mainly read fantasy/sci-fi for a reason – to escape the horrors of real life. This just isn’t for me.
4Sports– There isn’t a ton of this in YA fantasy, but in YA contemporary I see it every once and awhile. Someone as uncoordinated as me does not find sports-related books (or movies for that matter) all that appealing.
5Mean girls– You can keep your gossip girls. I watch every Real Housewives show created, so that’s probably why I’m good with this topic. Real Housewives of New Jersey is KILLING me this season! Phew, the drama!
6Talking animals– I didn’t like them when I was 10, and I still don’t like them. (Can’t you see Grumpy Cat saying this? 🙂 )
7Serial killers– Too scary for this wimp – especially when I read a lot at night…while my husband is in another room.
I honestly couldn’t think of any more topics because I’ve been trying new genres lately and am shocked at what I’ve liked.
Example: I’m not sure whether it was the cover or what, but I was NOT about Marissa Meyer’s Cinder. The cover was creepy, and I just didn’t get it. Finally, I said, what the heck, and read it. I’m now a robot, futuristic convert. Gimme more!
So, for the most part, I try to keep an open mind.
