Tyra Banks' Modelland: Cover + First Chapter

I’m not sure how you feel about celebrity authors, but I’m personally on the fence about it. I blogged about this topic a few months ago and decided to judge books on a case-by-case basis.

Recently, my attention keeps getting drawn by Tyra Banks’ new YA fantasy book, Modelland. The book’s description’s got me scratching my head a little:

“No one gets in without being asked. And with her untamable hair, large forehead, and gawky body, Tookie De La Crème isn’t expecting an invitation. Modelland—the exclusive, mysterious place on top of the mountain—never dares to make an appearance in her dreams.

But someone has plans for Tookie. Before she can blink her mismatched eyes, Tookie finds herself in the very place every girl in the world obsesses about. And three unlikely girls have joined her.

Only seven extraordinary young women become Intoxibellas each year. Famous. Worshipped. Magical. What happens to those who don’t make it? Well, no one really speaks of that. Some things are better left unsaid.

Thrown into a world where she doesn’t seem to belong, Tookie glimpses a future that could be hers—if she survives the beastly Catwalk Corridor and terrifying Thigh-High Boot Camp. Or could it? Dark rumors like silken threads swirl around the question of why Tookie and her new friends were selected . . . and the shadows around Modelland hide sinister secrets.

Are you ready? Modelland is waiting for you. . . .”

I don’t know if it’s the sometimes-awkward phrasing or the names (Tookie De La Créme; Intoxibella), but I’m seriously wondering how this book is going to read. I’m still deciding if I want to take time out of my TBR schedule to read this potential dud. I’m not one to judge a book by it’s cover though…

…cuz if I did, this one might not see the light of day. 😉

Judge for yourself!! Check out the first chapter of Modelland here.

I absolutely love Tyra, she’s such a hoot :) I’m definitely going to read this as soon as I can get my hands on it!

I agree!! I love America’s Next Top Model, and this book seems like the fiction, fantasy version of that! :)

I love Tyra, but I don’t know about this one. Still, can’t judge a book until you’ve read it….

      I agree! I’m trying really hard! :)

I’m not much of one for celebrity authors, but I’ll probably read this one because I’m (semi)obsessed with Tyra. From the summary, it sounds like it’s going to be a satire on the modeling industry? Can’t quite tell–it’s written pretty awkwardly. But I’m excited!

Hmm this is a maybe book for me. I’ve only read one book by a celebrity before and it was only so-so, so I’m not extremely excited about the idea or anything. But I might give this a chance if I have the time in the future 😀

I’ll probably read this just because it looks amusing. Though I won’t buy it, probably borrow it from the library. I’m optimistic and keeping an open mind! :)

I’ve been hearing about this one coming. Haven’t really heard any reviews yet. But I’m not really called to it, yet. :) I’ll see what I hear about it. Hope you get and enjoyit.
