Where’d They Go? – 8 Young Adult Authors Who Haven’t Written in Awhile & What They’re Working On Now

It’s a terrible thing to realize a favorite author has disappeared. You’re telling someone else, “Oh I loved this author’s book!! It came out recently…well, actually maybe not.” *googles the book* “WAT. It was 2012?!”

Then the spiraling begins. What is that author doing? Taking cat pics on Instagram? Drinking coffee in a chic cafe? WHY ARE THEY NOT WRITING?

This post is for everyone who’s as impatient as I am, and who refuses to let these poor writers have a break. GET THE TO A COMPUTER/TYPEWRITER, AUTHORS.

Where’d They Go? – 8 Young Adult Authors Who Haven’t Written in Awhile & What They’re Working On Now

This post is part of Fangirl in the Know an Read.Breathe.Relax. original feature that will help readers stay updated on what their favorite authors are up to next (i.e. after they finish the series we already love). This is VITAL to maintaining our fangirl status.

Veronica Roth

veronica roth author missing

Author Of: The Divergent series

Last Published Work: Allegiant in 2013

What They’re Up to Now:

She said in this 2013 interview:

“Still writing for young adults, although I don’t know what because right now I’m finishing off the short stories and then I’m going to take a little break, that’s my plan!”

Plus, when asked if she’ll write another dystopia, she said…

“I don’t know I think you’ve only got like one dystopia in you, you know as a writer so I think this was it for me dystopia wise and I’m ready to try something different.”

Suzanne Collins

suzanne collins authors who disappeared

Author Of: The Hunger Games series

Last Published Work: Year of the Jungle in 2013 (but it’s middle grade!)

What They’re Up to Now:

According to a Hypable article: “…we can hope that the first book in her next teenage series could see the light of day by the end of 2014 or early 2015.”

We’re waiting Suzanne…

Meg Cabot

meg cabot missing authors

Author Of: The Princess Diaries series, Abandon series, Boy series

Last Published Work: The Bride Wore Size 12 in 2013 (this is adult fiction)

What They’re Up to Now:

Goodreads tells me that Cabot is writing Royal Wedding, the nuptials of Princess Mia, which is due out in 2015. She’s also starting a Princess Diaries middle grade spin off called From the Notebooks of a Middle School Princess.

Not to mention, she’s working on Mediator #7, also due out in 2015. I guess she’s busy!

Christopher Paolini

paolini, christopher authors who haven't written in awhile

Author Of: Eragon books

Last Published Work: Inheritance in 2011.

What They’re Up to Now:

Again, Hypable had the scoop: “Over the past ten years, I’ve thought of a whole bunch of stories that I would like to write, stories in all different genres. Last I’ve looked, I have between twenty to thirty completely new books all plotted out. I’m pretty sure that I’m going to tackle science fiction next, but who knows? In the long term, though, I definitely intend to return to Eragon’s world and write a fifth book. After spending so long with the world and the characters of the Inheritance Cycle, I can’t bring myself to walk away from them for the rest of my life.”

John Green

john green missing authors

Author Of: Everything…Ok, Ok – Paper Towns, An Abundance of Katherines, Looking for Alaska

Last Published Work: The Fault in Our Stars in 2012

What They’re Up to Now:

There’s absolutely NO DETAILS, but The Racket is the name/placeholder for Green’s new 2015 work.

Patrick Ness

patrick ness authors haven't written in awhile

Author Of: Chaos Walking series, A Monster Calls

Last Published Work: More Than This in 2013

What They’re Up to Now:

The Rest of Us Just Live Here, due out August 2015!

Plus, Ness dished more about the title on his Tumblr HERE. He said, “I wanted to write a novel for anyone trying to live a normal life in a world gone mad, for anyone who actually has bigger problems than the end of the world (again), for anyone who needs to find out that there are many different kinds of extraordinary.”

Stephenie Meyer

stephenie meyer authors who haven't written in awhile

Author Of: Twilight series, The Host series

Last Published Work: The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner in 2009

What They’re Up to Now:

The Seeker (The Host #2) is expected to be released in 2015.

However, the Twilight author is busy doing other things…like being a producer! Did you know she produced the Shannon Hale book to movie adaption Austenland?! I HAD NO IDEA.

Variety reports that Meyer is set to co-produce Down a Dark Hall, a 1974 book by Lois Duncan. She says she’s still got stories left in her, but it may be awhile before she shares them with the world.

Stephen Chbosky

stephen-chbosky authors who haven't written in awhile

Author Of: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Last Published Work: ….The Perks of Being a Wallflower in 1999. It’s the only novel he’s written!!

What They’re Up to Now:

Stephen is writing a new book – THANK GOD. It’s not necessarily YA, but he said it will appeal to YA readers.

According to Chbosky, “It’s very close to Perks emotionally and thematically, but it’s told in a completely different genre. I’ve called it a very loving tribute to my favorite writer of all time, who is Stephen King. So it’s taking all these things, and these emotional issues that I was dealing with in Perks, and it’s putting quite a spin on it.”

And, “I won’t give it away. I created this character called Mary Katherine. And Mary Katherine is a wonderfully faithful Catholic teenage girl who is the guiltiest person who has ever lived. And her transformation through the course of the book is very exciting to write and has been very exciting to plot out.”

Plus he hopes its due out in 2015!

What missing authors are you curious about?!

About Lisa Parkin

I'm a hardcore lover of young adult fiction and have been reviewing books since 2011. Other interests include Downton Abbey, heat lightning storms, Harry Potter land and (begrudingly) one orange tabby.
  • This was a great post, I had no idea what these authors were up to!

  • Kayla @ The Thousand Lives

I guess this means I’ll have to get on it and finally finish the Inheritance Cycle; I can’t believe it’s been so long since it was published!

  • Beth

Honestly, if I were Suzanne Collins I’d probably not write another YA novel. Everyone is going to judge you by your first work and always find it wanting. How daunting!

Great news about Patrick Ness, though!

  • artsy musings

    WHOA,. Awesome post, Lisa!

I had no idea that Chbosky is writing a book and yay for Ness and Collins working in theirs!
